For those of you who have not yet picked up a copy of Hugh Hornstein's book "The Haywire" a brief history of the Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad, what are you waiting for? A little written about and much less studied railroad that ran through a swamp in the central UP and ended at a car ferry, what more could you ask for? These images are one's Hugh's research did not uncover, a 1923 Buick modified for mail and passenger service on the M&LS. The first one has a caption that says "Vern Niles in front of the, only one of its type in the world, mail car for the Haywire. Car designed by S.P. Reid, Circa 1936 (Keith Niles Collection), sent along to me by Clint Jones. The second photo postcard was sent in by Mark Worrall and appears to be the same gentlemen in the photo, wonder if he ever changed his clothes? Thanks so much for this very nice image Mark. Pick up Hugh's book today, it was well worth the wait.
